The Santa Clause Review: 2021 Edition

The Santa Clause is a Christmas movie that came out in 1994 and although it is pretty old at this point, it is a really good, nostalgic movie and definitely a must-watch every Christmas. After having watched The Santa Clause for the first time this year, I found that I really liked it because it was heartwarming and reminded me of my childhood. Although the movie was a bit predictable, I feel like it really captures the magic of Christmas. Honestly, it almost made me cry!

Here’s a recap if you haven’t seen it in a while, or at all:

According to Disney Plus, “Divorced dad Scott (Tim Allen) has custody of his son (Eric Lloyd) on Christmas Eve. After he accidentally kills a man in a Santa suit, they are magically transported to the North Pole, where an elf explains that Scott must take Santa's place before the next Christmas arrives. Scott thinks he's dreaming, but over the next several months he gains weight and grows an inexplicably white beard. Maybe that night at the North Pole wasn't a dream after all -- and maybe Scott has a lot of work to do.”

My take:

The film is very family-friendly and, unlike most movies, there isn’t technically a “bad guy” or an antagonist causing tension in the storyline. Some would say that Scott’s ex-wife and her new husband are the bad guys, but I think they were only trying to protect their son from what seemed like a psychopath (our main man Scott). However, they definitely made me very upset in the beginning and middle of the movie. Despite all of that, by the end of the movie, they understood what was going on and supported Scott.

I was very concerned that I wasn’t going to like this movie because of how long ago it had come out and the hype around it, but I ended up really liking it and it is now one of my new favorite Christmas movies. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who loves Disney Christmas movies.
