Social Media: Another brief at the good and the bad

Written by: Amry Young

As I glance around my classroom, I notice that the majority of my classmates are using their phones or some form of technology, but not for educational purposes. According to Datareportal in January 2024, the global overview of social media usage has continued to increase, with approximately 5.04 billion people (62.3% of the population) using social media, representing nearly half of the world's population, with nearly 266 million new users within the year. Social media encompasses digital technology that enables individuals to share ideas and information with others, including text, visuals, pictures, and more.

In the mid-1990s, the first social media site, "Six Degrees," was created, laying the foundation for platforms we know today such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, all designed to facilitate digital connections and friendships.

However, social media has its pros and cons, much like any other social platform. The pros include its utility for communicating with friends and family, as my mother asserts, "It's a good platform to talk to people you aren't able to see in person on a daily basis." Additionally, it can aid in self-development and may offer educational opportunities, depending on the sites you visit. For instance, if you're interested in current trends, you might visit therileyreview.com, where they analyze current trends and subscription usage, attracting over 230.7 million people, myself included.

Despite its benefits, social media also has its drawbacks. Excessive usage can lead to insomnia and sleep deprivation, particularly if used late at night. Additionally, it can inadvertently disclose sensitive information and be subject to misuse. Mental health is another concern, especially among young people, as teenagers may struggle to regulate their emotions and impulsivity. From my own observation, teenagers can be both blunt and sensitive, making them susceptible to triggers. However, individuals who can manage their social media usage effectively can minimize drama and overlook negative content.

In conclusion, social media presents a complex landscape for users of all ages, including youth, adults, and elders. While it offers numerous benefits, it also carries risks, prompting the U.S. to consider banning platforms like TikTok due to various issues it has caused. As noted by The Riley Review, efforts are underway to restrict or mitigate the app's usage. Reflecting on this, do you anticipate continuing to use social media or adjusting your usage habits?
